But first… a Brief History of Thanksgiving in Canada!
The first Thanksgiving in Canada was held by British explorer Martin Frobisher, who held a feast of thanks after a particularly difficult trip through the Arctic.
A short while later, in the early 1600s, Samuel de Champlain followed the custom of First Nations harvest festivals, holding feasts in New France that attracted French settlers as well as local Mi’kmaq people. It wasn’t until 1879 that Thanksgiving became an annual Canadian holiday, and it took even longer (1957!) for the second Monday of October to become the holiday’s official date.
Before the arrival of European settlers, Canada’s various Indigenous communities had long held celebrations centered on the fall harvest.
